Ichabods Recover To Win At Missouri Western

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- No. 11 Washburn dropped its second set at Missouri Western Saturday and was trailing 17-10 in the 3rd set before rebounding to win 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 26-24, 25-20).

The Ichabods improved to 22-4 overall and remained in first in the MIAA with a 9-1 record. Missouri Western fell to 12-13 and 5-6 in the league. Washburn will return home to host Emporia State at 5 p.m.

Marissa Cox had 18 kills and hit .412 with just four errors in 34 swings. Corrinne Stringer added 16 kills and Leanna Willer had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.

Makayla Maxwell hit .500 with six kills and she led the team with four blocks. Sarah Vicory added eight kills.

Abby Wittman set 48 assists and had a team-high 16 digs for a double-double. Sami McHenry had 12 digs and Kelsey Lewis had 11.

The second set had eight ties and four lead changes. The Griffons took a 16-12 lead with a 6-0 run but Washburn erased it with a 7-3 run to tie the set at 19-19. The Griffons then scored four straight and then two more after that to clinch the set and tie the match.

Missouri Western used a 6-0 run in the third set to go up 17-10 before Washburn fought back. The Ichabods scored seven of the next eight points to get within one at 18-17 but the two teams traded points two times after that before a 4-0 run put Washburn up 22-20. The Griffons then recovered and tied the set at 22-22 and 24-24. Two straight MWSU errors then gave Washburn the set and a 2-1 advantage.

Washburn broke a 4-4 tie in the fourth set and never trailed again en route to the win. Two kills from Cox during a 3-0 run gave Washburn a 21-13 lead and Stringer later scored a kill to get to match point and another to clinch it.

Stringer pushed her three-school, four-year career total to 1,004 kills. She played at Kansas in 2008 and at Pittsburg State from 2009-10. This will be her only year at Washburn.

The Ichabods hit .239 in the match while MWSU hit .137 as a team. The Griffons blocked 12 Washburn attacks while WU blocked six. The Ichabods held a 63-50 advantage in kills.
