Ichabods Fall For The First Time At Newman

WICHITA, Kan. -- The No. 2-ranked Washburn Ichabods fell for the first time this season losing at Newman 86-69 in a battle of undefeated teams. Washburn (7-1) will face Emporia State on Jan. 3 in Topeka in a non-conference game.

The Jets (8-0) led from start to finish as they hit 5 of their first 6 shots from the field jumping out to a 7-2 lead just over two minutes into the game. Washburn rallied and cut the Jets lead to 7-6 after a pair of Will McNeillfree throws. Again the Jets jumped out to a five-point lead, but the Ichabods came back to tie the score at 11 with 14:26 left in the first half. A 10-2 run by the Jets over the next three minutes pushed the Newman lead back out to eight, but again the Ichabods trimmed the lead back to one at 22-21. The Jets pushed out to a six-point lead at 32-26 before the Ichabods for the third time cut the lead back to a one-point lead at 32-31 just before the half. However the Jets would go on a 10-4 run to end the half with a 45-37 lead for the first Ichabod deficit at the half of the season.

In the second half, the Ichabods came out and cut the Jets' lead to three at 45-42 and to six at 60-54 and at 62-56 but would get no closer as the Jets picked up the win.

Washburn was led by McNeill's 20 points as he finished 14 of 17 from the free throw line collecting five steals. Martin Mitchell had 10 points. Alex North returned to the court for the first time since suffering a concussion in the Bethany game prior to Thanksgiving scoring nine points off the bench hitting a pair of three pointers. Bobby Chipman led the Ichabods with seven rebounds scoring seven.

Darrell Traylor and Shamar Acuay scored 15 off the bench for the Jets.

Washburn turned the ball over 18 times leading to 16 points for Newman. Newman also outrebounded the Ichabods 40 to 33 in the game. The Jets finished 46 percent from the field hitting nine 3-pointers. Washburn was 39 percent from the field and 2 of 16 from 3-point range. Both teams finished 25 of 37 from the free throw line. Newman's bench outscored the Ichabod bench 41 to 15.
