ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Washburn Ichabods lost their second straight game to a top 15 team dropping a 56-28 decision at No. 11-ranked Missouri Western. The Ichabods will return to action in the regular season finale hosting Emporia State in the 109th meeting of the Turnpike Tussle.
Missouri Western scored the first 28 of the game before the Ichabods got on the board with a 71-yard touchdown run by Hayden Groves with 6:28 left in the first half. Washburn added another touchdown going into the break when Kameron Stewart scored on a 3-yard run cutting the Griffon lead to 28-14.
However coming out the break the Griffons scored the first 28 points of the second half starting with a score on their opening drive pushing their lead back to 56-14 with 9:43 left in the game.
Washburn added two more scores with 4:18 remaining when Joel Piper hit Ryan Mertz scored on a 2-yard touchdown pass and Matt Kobbeman pulled down an 8-yard touchdown pass with under a minute left to wrap up the scoring with the Griffons taking the 56-28 win.
Groves finished with 123 yards on 18 carries and Stewart had 57 on 15 carries. Piper finished 13 of 24 passing for 153 yards and two scores and Kobbeman finished with seven catches for 60 yards and Tore' Hurst had six catches for 106 yards.
Williie Williams had 14 tackles with four solo stops and Bryce Atagi had 11 tackles. Jaime Myers had one interception for Washburn.
The Griffons finished with 418 yards rushing averaging 7.9 yards per carry with Washburn recording 177. Overall the Griffons had 569 yards compared to the Ichabods' 375.
