TOPEKA, Kan. (wusports.com) The Washburn Ichabods trailed by double digits in the first half and rallied to take the lead in the second half but could not make it hold up as Northeastern State used a run of its own to pull out a 79-75 win over the Ichabods ending Washburn's season at 17-10.
After trailing by as many as 13 in the first half, the Ichabods chipped away at the RiverHawks lead in the second half using a 23-9 run over a 9:25 stretch of the second half to turn a 48-44 deficit with 17:58 to play in the game into a 65-57 advantage with 8:45 to go. During the run the Ichabods held the RiverHawks (15-12) to 2 of 10 shooting while Washburn was 9 of 15 to pull infront. However the RiverHawks would outscore the Ichabods 22-10 the remainder of the game taking the four-point win and advancing to the MIAA Tournament Quarterfinals where they will face top-seeded Central Missouri at noon on Friday.
During the RiverHawks final scoring run, Washburn was held to 2 of 10 shooting while the RiverHawks hit 7 of 8 shots including 3 of 3 3-point attempts. Washburn tied the score at 71 with 3:48 to go, but Washburn missed its last four field goal attempts and the RiverHawks were 2 of 3 hitting a 3-pointer in the process securing the win.
Washburn was led by Kyle Wiggins who scored 24 points and Alex North recorded a double double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. It was North's 10th double double of the season and the 12 of his career. He finished the season with a team-high 16.1 ppg average and 10.0 rpg average becoming only the sixth Ichabod to average a double double during the season and the first since Clarence Tyson did during the 1993-94 season. Korey Fisher scored 11.
Landon DeMasters led five RiverHawks in double figures with 21 points.
The Ichabods shot 48 percent from the field hitting 28 of 59 shots while the RiverHawks were 24 of 46 for a 52 percent average. Washburn was outshot at the free throw line 22 of 28 by NSU compared to 12 of 16 for the Ichabods. Washburn held a 36 to 23 advantage on the glass holding the RiverHawks to three offensive rebounds.
