TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabods held Southwest Baptist to 145 total yards including just 17 yards in the second half in a 42-14 win over the Bearcats. Washburn returns to action at Lincoln on Oct. 6 in Jefferson City. In the second frame, the Bearcats ran 20 plays for -10 yards while gaining 27 yards on 12 plays in the fourth quarter.
Washburn (4-1, 4-1 MIAA) scored first after the teams traded punts to start the game. Mitch Buhler hit Tore' Hurst on a 13-yard passing play to put the Ichabods on the board with 10:18 to play in the first quarter. The Bearcats (1-4, 1-4 MIAA) took advantage of an Ichabod turnover on a punt return and set up shop on the Ichabod 22. Five plays later Southwest Baptist's Dan Connors connected with Just Duhaney for a 9-yard touchdown pass knotting the score with 6:13 to play in the first.
Washburn took the lead for good with a Hayden Groves 3-yard run with 13:39 to play in the first half as he wrapped up a 9-play, 58-yard drive putting the Ichabods infront 14-7. Washburn extended its lead on their next possession when Joel Piper hit Hurst on an 8-yard touchdown pass with 9:45 to play in the half.
After a three-and-out by the Bearcats, Piper hit a streaking Jordan Hart down the sideline for a 47-yard touchdown connection stretching the Ichabod lead to 28-7 midway through the first half as the Ichabods took a three touchdown lead into the break.
Neither team scored in the third quarter as both team struggled offensively. The Ichabods held SBU to the -10 yards of offense while the Ichabods had 22 plays for 50 yards going a combined 0 for 7 on third and fourth down conversion opportunities.
After a tipped punt from the SBU end zone, Washburn took over at their own 15 and Kameron Stewart had four straight carries finishing it off with a 2-yard run putting Washburn up 35-7 with 12:51 to play in the game.
SBU came back with a scoring drive on its next possession to score on an MJ Swortwood rush cutting the Ichabod lead to 35-14 with 10:21 to play.
After more punts, Washburn regained possession and Piper hit Connor Crimmins on a 19-yard touchdown pass with 1:35 remaining to put the Ichabods up 42-14 to finish off the scoring as the Ichabods picked up their sixth-straight win over SBU.
Stewart became the first Ichabod to go over the 100-yard mark in a game this season rushing for 104 yards on 20 carries and the lone score. At quarterback, Piper was 7 of 12 for 128 yards and three touchdown passes. Hurst led the Ichabods with four catches for 37 yards and two scores.
Defensively, the Ichabods recorded 14 tackles for loss for 76 yards as Bryce Atagi led the team with 14 tackles including two for loss. Ryan Macken had nine tackles. Alex Dowty and Corey Walker each had 1.5 sacks as Washburn finished with six sacks for 50 yards on the afternoon. Isaac Wright and Jaime Myers each had interceptions for Washburn.
Robert McWright had 36 yards rushing to lead SBU while Swortwood was 11 of 26 for 67 yards.
The Ichabods finished with 408 total yards while holding SBU to 145 in the game.
