TOPEKA, Kan. -- The No. 17-ranked Washburn Ichabods shot a smoking 63 percent in the second half en route to a 57 percent performance for the game as Washburn topped Northwest Missouri 80-67 on Schendel Court at Lee Arena on Saturday night. Washburn will take on Missouri Western on the road on Wednesday in St. Joseph, Mo., and then take on Northwest for the second time in a week next Saturday in Maryville.
With the Ichabods (15-4, 8-4 MIAA) up one at 21-20 with 4:45 to play in the half, a Martin Mitchell 3-pointer started a 13-4 run to end the period sending the Ichabods to the locker room with a 34-22 lead over Northwest (15-7, 8-5 MIAA).
To start the second half, the Ichabods came out on a 13-2 run over the first 4:21 of play to open up a 47-24 lead for their biggest lead of the night at 23.
Washburn kept the Bearcats at arms-length until the Bearcats finished the game on a 9-0 run over the final 53 seconds to pull within 13 at the buzzer.
Mitchell led the Ichabods with 20 points on 8 of 11 shooting overall going 4 of 6 from 3-point range adding four rebounds and four assists.
Will McNeill had 16 points to go with four rebounds, three assists and two steals becoming the sixth Ichabod to score at least 1,000 points while dishing out 200 career assists. Christian Ulsaker and 11 points hitting all seven free throw attempts and Kyle Wiggins finished with 10 points.
Kyler Erickson had 17 points off the bench to lead the Bearcats. Grant Cozad had 13 off the bench and DeAngelo Hailey had 12.
Washburn finished at 57 percent from the field while limiting the Bearcats to 21 of 59 shooting for the game. The Bearcats did have a 34 to 28 advantage on the glass converting 19 offensive rebounds to 25 second chance points. The Northwest bench also outscored the Ichabod bench 48-21.
