April 22, 2014-Emporia State got another strong outing from their pitching staff in a 4-1 win over Newman on Tuesday night at the Trusler Sports Complex. With the win the Hornets ran their winning streak to 12 games and finished the non-conference portion of their schedule at 7-1.
Kevin Shaffer went 7.0 innings and allowed just one run on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks to even his record at 2-2. Matt Hinkley had a six pitch eighth for the hold and this week's MIAA Astroturf Pitcher of the Week Brenton Higgins worked a perfect ninth for his league leading tenth save of the year.
Emporia State took a 1-0 lead in the second on back to back singles by Wade Hanna and Tory Bell. Dean Long hit his 12th home run of the year in the fifth to plate Justin Harris and give the Hornets a 3-0 lead. The Jets cut the lead to 3-1 with three singles in the top of the seventh. An RBI single by Hanna in the eighth scored Price Jacobs and gave Emporia State a 4-1 lead headed to the ninth.
Hanna was two for four with an RBI and a run scored while Long went one for one with three walks and the two run homer.
The Hornets will wrap up the regular season with a four game series at Lindenwood this weekend. The first game is set of Friday at 6:00 p.m. in St. Charles, Mo.
