February 28, 2013-Emporia State powered their way to a 61-55 win over Washburn in White Auditorium on the night the floor was officially announced as ron Slaymaker Court. The win snapped a five game winning streak over the Hornets by the Ichabods.
In a defensive first half, Washburn jumped out to a 7-2 lead before the Hornets answered with a 5-0 run to tie the score at 7-7 with 13:36 left in the half. There were two ties and two lead changes over the next eight minutes as the Ichabods took a 21-18 lead with 4:47 remaining in the period. Emporia State ended the half on a 9-0 run as Taylor Euler's three-pointer with :04 left gave the Hornets a 27-21 lead at the break.
Emporia State stretched the run to 16-0 as they scored the first seven points of the second half, capped by another Euler three-pointer with 17:50 remaining. A Will McNeill steal and dunk cut the Hornet lead to six at 38-32 with 11:26 left. Emporia State then went on their own 6-0 run to force a WU timeout with 10:33 left and the Hornets up 44-32. As the teams left the court , a small confrontation broke out that resulted in technicals on the Ichabods Joseph Smith and the Hornets Kaleb Wright and Terrence Moore. McNeill would hit three free throws on the ensuing possession to cut the lead to 44-35 with 10:21 left.
The Hornets pushed the lead back to ten with 5:29 left on Tre Boutilier's three pointer with 5:29 left before Washburn made their final push. A 10-3 run capped by Smith's dunk with 2:18 remaining cut the Emporia State lead to 53-50. Wright scored an old fashioned three-point play out of a timeout to give the Hornets a 56-50 lead with 1:49 left. Euler and McNeill traded free throws and Kyle Wiggins nailed a three-pointer with 22.1 seconds left to cut the Emporia Staet lead to 58-55.
Euler hit two free throws with 17 seconds left to put the Hornets up five. Martin Mitchell missed a three pointer at the other end and Michael Harris pulled the rebound and proceeded to hit one of two free throws for the final score of 61-55.
Paul Bunch led the Hornets with 15 points, ten rebounds and four blocked shots. He was joined in double figures by Kaleb Wright with 14 points and Taylor Euler with ten points, five assists and four steals. Washburn was led by Will McNeill with 27 points.
The game saw 41 fouls called including five technicals.
Emporia State will wrap up regular season play on Saturday at Pittsburg State. With a win over the Gorillas the Hornets can secure the seventh seed in the MIAA Tournament and a first round home game. With a loss they can also secure a first round home game with a loss by Southwest Baptist at Missouri Western or wins by both Missouri Southern and SBU. Tip-off in Pittsburg is set for 3:30 p.m.
