November 9, 2013 - The #10 Emporia State football team gave up seven sacks and had two punts blocked in a 48-21 loss to #2 Northwest Missouri on Saturday afternoon in Welch Stadium. The loss snaps a ten game winning streak for the Hornets dating back to last season.
Northwest Missouri took the opening kick off and drove to the Emporia State two yard line before the Hornet defense held on fourth down. Emporia State went three and out on the ensuing possession and ELi Kuhns punt was partially blocked, setting the Bearcats up at the Hornets 21 yard line. Five plays later Trevor Adams scored from a yard out for a 6-0 lead after the PAT hit the upright.
Emporia State answered with a four play, 74 yard drive capped with a 45 yard pass from Brent Wilson to Kavaski Ervin. Kuhns PAT gave the Hornets a 7-6 lead with 3:59 left in the quarter.
The Bearcats would take the lead with 6:03 left in the half on Adams five yard pass to Jason Jozaites to cap a 17 play, 85 yard drive. The Hornets drove to the Bearcat 21 yard line and appeared to have a first down but were pushed back to the 36 by a chop block penalty. After an incomplete pass the Hornets were called for kick catch interference giving the Bearcats the ball at the 29 yard line. On third and 13 Adams connected with Bryce Young for a 74 yard touchdown and 20-7 loead with 1:34 left in the half.
The second half opened with Wilson getting intercepted on the third play by DJ Gnader who returned it to the Hornet 18 yard line. The Bearcats went up 27-7 on a six yard pass from Adams to Robert Burton. Northwest had to convert a fourth down to keep the drive alive. The Hornets went three and out on the next drive but got the ball back when Jordan Sanders stripped the ball from Brady Bolles at the 31 yard line. Emporia State put together one of their best drives of the game following the turnover. Wilson was five for eight for 43 yards on the drive and Antonio Brown added 23 yards on two carries. Dozie Iwaugwu carried the ball the final two times capped by a one yard touchdown to pull the Hornets within 27-14 with 5:13 left in the third quarter.
Northwest answered with a nine play, 75 yard drive and went ahead 34-14 with 1:32 left in the quarter on a five yard pass from Adams to Young. Emporia State could not get any positive yardage on the next drive and had to punt again. The Bearcats took a 41-14 lead on a 21 yard pass from Adams to Jozaites with 12:22 left in the quarter. The Hornets drove to midfield before being pushed back to their own 35 on another illegal block. Kuhns got his second punt blocked to set the Bearcats up at the Emporia State 25 yard line. Five plays later Billy Creason scored from two yards out to put NWMSU up 48-14.
Corben Jones came in at quarterback on the next possession for the Hornets. He hit Mitchell Foote for a 34 yard completion and then found Ervin for a 44 yard touchdown for the final points of the game.
Ervin had five catches for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Hornet quarterbacks combined to go 14 of 25 for 209 yards and two touchdowns with Wilson going 12 of 23 for 131 yards and Jones hitting both of his passes for 78 yards. Antonio Brown had 68 yards on 13 carries. Jordan Sanders had 11 tackles with a forced fumble and recovery while Ashton Reichmann had ten stops.
The Hornets will be back in action on November 16 when they play host to Washburn. A win in the Turnpike Tussle will put the Hornets in position to go the NCAA playoffs for the first time since 2003 and will almost assure a second straight trip to the post season.
Wilson passed Tyler Eckenrode for third in single season passing yards and now has 2,623 yards.
Wilson now has 31 touchdown passes to rank eighth on the MIAA single season list.
