April 4, 2014 In another tight Turnpike Tussle contest, the Emporia State baseball team fell 10-9 at Washburn in 11 innings on Friday night in Topeka.
Price Jacobs gave the Hornets an early 1-0 lead with a home run in the top of the second, only to see the Ichabods put up single tallies in the ech of the next three innings to take a 3-1 lead after four complete. Emporia State retook the lead with a five run sixth inning. Dean Long had an RBI double while Toby Cornejo and Aaron Gile both hit two run homers in the frame. Another double from Long and a single from Cornejo gave the Hornets an 8-4 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
The Ichabods then put up five runs in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by a grand slam from Riley Price. Gile answered quickly with a lead off homer in the top of the eighth to tie the score at 9-9. Neither team would score again until Washburn was able to push across a one out run in the bottom of the 11th on back to back singles from Kyle Carnahan and Matt Jackson.
Long was three for six with two RBI and two runs scored on two doubles for the Hornets. Gile was two for five with two homers, three RBI and two runs scored and Cornejo went two for six with three RBI, a home run and a run scored. Brenton Higgins took the loss, going 3.2 innings with six strikeouts and allowing two runs on six hits.
The two teams will meet in a double header on Saturday at the Trusler Sports Complex. First pitch from Glennen Field is set for 2:00 p.m.
