April 28, 2013 - After dropping both ends of a double header at #8 Central Missouri on Sunday, Emporia State can secure home field for the opening round of the MIAA Tournament with a win on Monday in the final game of the series.
The Hornets could not hold onto an early lead as they fell 7-3 in the matinee. Todd Reller gave Emporia State the lead with a two run double in the first. Reller led off the third with a double and would come home on a sac fly from Luke Slagle to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead.
Central Missouri got single runs in the fourth and fifth to cut the lead to 3-2 and then scored four runs in the sixth to take the lead.
Reller was two for three with a run scored and two RBI. Keith Picht gave up five runs on four hits in 1.0 innings of relief to take the loss.
In the nightcap both teams were scoreless through three innings before the Mules broke through with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. They went up 6-0 with a four run sixth inning that included one that scored after the batter reached base on wild pitch on strike three.
The Hornets broke through with a run in the eighth following a double by David Richards and an RBI single from Todd Schultz.
Reller went two for four in the second game. Talkington took the loss giving up two runs on five hits in 4.0 innings.
The two teams will meet in the final game of the regular season on Monday at 6 p.m. in Warrensburg. With a win the Hornets will finish third in the confernece and host a first round MIAA Tournament series beginning on Thursday. With a loss Emporia State will drop to fifth and go on the road for the opening series.
