March 28, 2014- Shawn Talkington fanned a season high 11 batters without a walk as Emporia State defeated Ft. Hays State 8-6 on Friday night in Hays, Kan. The Hornets had four home runs account for six of their eight runs.
On a windy night in western Kansas, the Tigers got on the board first with a lead off home run from Horace Johnson in the second inning. A double from Kodie Fewin made it 2-0 going to the third. The Hornets responded with a solo home run from Tory Bell and an RBI double by Dean Long to tie the score in the top of the third. A Justin Harris triple and RBI single by Wade Hannah made it 3-2 Emporia State in the top fo the fourth. Johnson hit his second home run of the night, this one a two run shot, and was followed by a solo homer by Kevin Czarnecki to give Ft. Hays State a 5-3 lead after four complete.
The score stayed that way until the seventh when Emporia State got a pair of two run home runs from Price Jacobs and Aaron Gile to take a 7-5 lead. Dean Long hit a solo homer in the top of the eighth for an 8-5 Hornet lead. The Tigers got an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth, but Brenton Higgins retired the final five batters he faced to pick up his sixth save of the year.
Long went two for five with a homer and a double for two RBI and a run scored.Jacobs also went two for five with two RBI and a run scored while Bell went two for three with a home run. Talkington pitched 7.0 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with 11 strikeouts and no walks to pick up his fourth win. Higgins worked the final 1.2 innings to get the save, striking out the side in the ninth.
The Hornets and Tigers continue the four game series with a double header on Saturday in Hays, Kan. First pitch from Larks Park is set for 1:00 p.m.
