Holton, Kan. (WIBW)-- For most teams, reaching the state semi-finals is a great accomplishment, but they set the bar higher at Holton and despite losing 23 seniors, the Wildcats want a state title.

Brooks Barta's squad returns just 3 starters from a team that loss to a year ago in the 4A state semi-finals.

New state classifications have pushed the Wildcats into 4A Division II but an opening schedule that features 3A champ Silver Lake and 5A Maize South, provides no easy cake walk.

The wildcats recognize their weakness is inexperience but tradition is what drives them towards state expectations.

Coach Barta said, "We start pretty green with only 3 starters back so it is going to take some time but I like how we are working and playing intelligent. We just need to get better fundamentally.

"We expect a lot of success but we will have to work hard because we have a lot of new starters and we have to work through it for a successful year," said Senior Offensive Lineman Dean Klahr.

Senior RB Louis Butto said, "We expect hard hitting, running the ball well and winning. We want to win State and a Big Seven championship."

"We are a new team with the same dream and the potential to compete for a State championship if we do the things needed every day and I think they can do that," said Coach Barta.

Holton opens the season at 3A Champ Silver Lake, September 5.
