Herron Signs Three Kansas High School Seniors And Two From Nebraska

Washburn head coach Chris Herron announced this week that five high school seniors have singed national letters of intent to attend Washburn and play volleyball next year for the Lady Blues.

The signing class includes two players from Topeka, one from the Kansas City area and two from Omaha. Two middle hitters, two outside hitters and a setter make up the class as Herron looks to replace his three graduating seniors.

The Lady Blues wrapped up their sixth straight 30-win season last week at 31-4. They finished second in the MIAA with a 15-2 record and advanced to their ninth straight NCAA tournament.

Natalie Bates • 5-7 • Setter • Overland Park, Kan. • Blue Valley West HS
Earned three letters in volleyball, sitting out her junior year with an ACL injury…earned 6A all-state and all-Eastern Kansas League honors her senior year…averaged 10.6 assists a set her senior year to lead the EKL…was a two-time AVCA/MaxPreps player of the week…holds the school record for serve percentage…her sophomore year she earned all-league in basketball and also played soccer…was a EKL scholar athlete her first two years and her volleyball team was state runner-up her freshman year.

Tatiana Schafer • 5-8 • Outside Hitter • Topeka, Kan. • Seaman HS
A four-year letterwinner…earned second team all-state and first team 5A all-state her junior year…was a two-time first team all-city and all-league player…earned second team all-league in basketball her sophomore year, as well as to the all-defensive team.

Sarah Vicory • 6-1 • Middle Hitter • Topeka, Kan. • Washburn Rural HS
Lettered in volleyball all four years…earned first team all-city and all-league her junior and senior years…her team won the state championship her freshman, junior and senior years…earned first team all-city her freshman year and then second team her sophomore year…was a finalist for the national high school freshman of the year award…played softball her first two years and earned second team all-city and all-league as a sophomore…earned first team Kaw Valley League all-academic her first three years and currently has a 3.98 GPA in her senior year.

Leanna Willer • 5-10 • Outside Hitter • Omaha, Neb. • Elkhorn HS
A four-year letterwinner in volleyball…earned all-state by the Lincoln Journal-Star her senior year…was all-state Class B her sophomore and junior years…broke her school records for career kills and kills in a season as a senior…was voted team MVP her final two years…competed on track team her first three years and placed fifth her junior year in the long jump and eighth as a sophomore…played basketball as a sophomore and junior…has carried a 4.0 GPA and is a member of the academic honor roll.

Makayla Maxwell • 6-1 • Middle Hitter • Omaha, Neb. • Millard North HS
A three-year letterwinner…earned all-class honorable mention her sophomore year and all-Metro third team her junior year…she led her team in kills and blocks as a senior and helped team to seventh-place state finish with a 27-14 record.
