TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Shawnee Heights baseball team hopes to improve on last year's third place finish in the 5A state baseball tournament.
Coach Ryan Schmidt says his team's strength is its depth of pitching. He says he can put any of four guys on the mound and be confident they'll get them off the field and back at bat. From there, the focus is to play error-free.
Senior catcher Mason Gifford says he and his teammates have battled through the ups and downs of the season to tighten things up in practice and develop the attitude that "we need to be at state."
Schmidt says, as a coach, he wants them players to have the expectation that they will reach state. He says he's glad to see their hard work in the off-season and in practice pay off, and they deserve to be in the tournament.
Shawnee Heights is seeded fifth in 5A. They open Thursday against St. Thomas Aquinas at K-State's Tointon Family Stadium.
