Geubelle Concludes KU Career with Seventh in Long Jump at USA Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa – In what was likely her final competition in a Kansas uniform, Andrea Geubelle again proved her status as one of the top jumpers in the nation as she claimed a seventh-place finish in the long jump at the USA Track & Field Championships Saturday inside in Drake Stadium.

Geubelle, who was crowned the USA’s triple jump champion Thursday, entered the day as the No. 7 ranked American in the long jump this year, following her personal best and school record leap of 6.69 meters (21’11.5”) during the indoor season. Geubelle played up to her ranking Saturday afternoon improving on each of her first three trips down the runway to earn herself a spot among the top eight moving into the final rounds.

Unable to improve on her third attempt mark, a leap of 6.37 meters (20’10.75”), Geubelle completed her sixth attempt in seventh place overall. She finished her senior season as the owner of two Big 12 championships, two NCAA Championships and an American title, the first Jayhawk to garner individual championships at those three levels in a single season since KU shot putter Karl Salb achieved the feet in 1973.

Paris Daniels began her weekend in Des Moines with the preliminary rounds of the 200 meters. The senior, running in the last of four heats, completed her half lap in a winded-aided time of 22.59. The mark is the third-fastest under any conditions in school history, earned her a third-place finish in her heat and, more importantly, an automatic qualification to the semifinal round to be held Sunday afternoon. Daniels’ time ranked 11th among the 16 semifinal qualifiers and earned her a spot in the second of two semifinal heats to run Sunday at 2:22 p.m. If she is one of the top four finishers in that race, she will advance to the event final slated for later in the day Sunday at 4:20 p.m.

In addition to Daniels, junior Jessica Maroszek will also compete on the final day of the 2013 USA Championships, taking part in the discus set to begin at 2:20 p.m. Follow all the action Sunday by following on Twitter at @KUTrack and logging on to
