Fletcher Named Big 12’s Offensive Player of the Week
IRVING, Texas – Kansas’ junior midfielder Jamie Fletcher has been honored by the Big 12 Conference as she was named Offensive Player of the Week when the conference’s final regular season weekly awards were announced Tuesday. It is the second weekly Big 12 honor earned by a Jayhawk this season and the second of Fletcher's career.
Fletcher lifted Kansas to a 2-1 win over Oklahoma Friday afternoon which earned the Jayhawks the eighth and final spot to the Big 12 Championship. She tallied her second-career multi-goal game as she put in both of the Jayhawks’ goals on the day. After scoring her first of the afternoon in the 29th minute, the Albuquerque native broke a 1-1 tie with her header with less than two minutes remaining in regulation to seal her team’s victory and punch KU’s 13th ticket to the conference tournament in the last 15 seasons.
Fletcher was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week two seasons ago as a freshman after her two-goal outing versus Arkansas on Aug. 21, 2011. The only other Jayhawk to claim a weekly conference award this season was junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Stroud, who was named Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 24.
Kansas will arrive in Kansas City, Mo., Tuesday afternoon in preparation for its quarterfinal match versus West Virginia on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 5:30 p.m. in the Big 12 Soccer Championship.
