Emporia State Wins Home Opener 74-60 Over Central Christian

November 14, 2012 - The Emporia State men's basketball team won its 14th straight home opener with a 74-60 win over Central Christian at White Auditorium in Emporia, Kan.

Kaleb Wright was the leading scorer with 25 points on 10 of 18 shooting, adding six rebounds and four assists. Daniel Shaw added 13 points on four of five shooting, also going five for six at the foul line. Gavin Brown led the Hornets in rebounds with seven and had nine points, going seven of eight from the charity stripe. Chris Sights led the team in assists with five, and also had nine points. Taylor Euler's nine points all came on threes, as he went three for seven from beyond the arc.

The Hornets out rebounded the Tigers 37-24, including a 23-8 advantage at the half. The Hornets also shot 50% from the field (26-of-52) while holding the Tigers to 38% shooting, 29% in the first half.

Central Christian's largest lead of the game came early in the first half at 7-5. Emporia State went on a 9-2 run from that point, and never trailed again in the game, and entered halftime up 36-23.

The Tigers closed the gap to four points after Christopher Jones sank two free throws to make the score 44-40 with 12:03 remaining in the second half.

At the 9:06 mark, Wright connected on a three to give the Hornets a 53-45 lead, and followed it up with another to extend the lead to 56-47. A steal by Brown led to a fast break, which led to another three-pointer from Euler, giving the Hornets a 12 point lead.

The Hornets biggest lead of the game was 21 points, coming with 1:22 remaining in the game.

Jones was the Tigers' leading scorer with 20 points, four assists, and four rebounds.

Emporia State improved to 2-0 on the year, while Central Christian fell to 6-1.

The Hornets will take part in the Western Oregon DII Shootout this weekend. Emporia State takes on Saint Martin's Friday at 7:15 p.m. in Monmouth, Ore.
