October 6, 2012- The Emporia State volleyball completed day two of the Lady Blues Fall Classic in Topeka, Kan. unbeaten with a 25-22, 25-22, 25-14 victory over Southern Nazarene and a 25-11, 25-15, 25-19 sweep over Southwestern Oklahoma State. The Hornets won all four matches at tournament.
Against Southern Nazarene, the Hornets made excellent use of their attacks, hitting .408 for the match. Paige Vanderpool led the Hornets in kills with 13 and added eight digs. Caitlin Murray finished with nine kills, and led Emporia State with four total blocks while hitting .600 (9-for-15, zero errors). Carly Spicer was the most efficient hitter with a .625 hitting percentage totaling six kills from eight attempts with one error. Katie Deutschmann assisted on 26 kills and added eight kills of her own. Meg Schwartz led the Hornets defensively with 14 digs.
Emporia State's defense was the story In the second match as the Hornets outblocked Southwestern Oklahoma State 13-3, had a 47-33 advantage in digs and held the Bulldogs -.058 hitting percentage.
Courney Haring led Emporia State with nine kills and nine total blocks, one solo and eight assists. Haring also led the Hornets with a .471 hitting percentage (9-for-17, one error). Morgan Buckner chipped in with six kills and six block assists. Brianna Kaiser was the Hornets' dig leader against the Bulldogs with 11, with Schwartz and Deutschmann adding nine apiece. Sydney Hartman dished out 15 assists.
The Hornets were in control for the majority of the match, with only two lead changes the whole match. Emporia State never trailed in set one or two.
Emporia State improved to 13-6 after winning each match in the tournament.
Emporia State returns to MIAA play when it visits Missouri Southern in Joplin, Mo. on Oct. 12. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
