November 3, 2012 - Meg Schwartz moved into fourth place on Emporia State's all-time dig list as the Hornets were defeated 25-17, 25-15, 24-26, 25-21 by Pittsburg State at John Lance Arena in Pittsburg, Kan.
Schwartz's 20 digs led the team and brought her total to 1,709 for her career, surpassing former All-American Arica Shepard by a single dig.
Katie Deutschmann came just shy of completing a triple double with eight kills, 18 assists, and 13 digs. Paige Vanderpool led the Hornets in kills with nine while Raney Okeson added eight. Vanderpool, Courtney Haring, and Carly Spicer shared the team lead with four total blocks.
Pittsburg State controlled the first two sets, as the Hornets only held the lead on one occasion. Emporia State was held to a hitting percentage of .000 in set one, -.038 in set two, and .113 for the match.
The Hornets were trailing in the third set 20-15 before goin on an 11-4 run to take the set 26-24. The rally was keyed by service aces from Deutschmann and Spicer and three kills from Brianna Kaiser.
Nichole Rockhold led the Gorillas with 19 kills, 23 digs and five service aces.
Emporia State falls to 17-10, 7-7 MIAA. Pittsburg State improves to 13-13, 4-10 MIAA.
The Hornets return to White Auditorium for a match with Fort Hays State on Tuesday. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
