November 2, 2012 – The Emporia State volleyball team earned a 25-15, 25-23, 25-21 sweep over Central Oklahoma in Edmond, where the Hornets out blocked the MIAA’s top blocking team 10-4.
Paige Vanderpool earned her second straight double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs while Brianna Kaiser added nine kills and nine blocks. Courtney Haring accounted for six total blocks to lead the team. Katie Deutschmann had 28 kills and six kills. The Hornets also hit .297 as a team.
In the first set, Central Oklahoma jumped out to an 11-9 lead until Emporia State went on a 9-0 run to take control of the set. The Hornets out blocked the Bronchos 5-0, with Haring led the way with four total blocks in the set.
Set two saw 12 ties and five lead changes, with the Hornets ultimately emerging with a 25-23 win. Emporia State trailed 22-20 before going on a 5-1 run to close out the set, capped off by a kill from Caitlyn Murray.
With the score 15-14 in set three, Kaiser recorded three kills in short order to give the Hornets a 18-15 lead, which they maintained to the end. Deutschmann and Murray blocked an attack by Morgan Roy for the final point.
Roy led all players with 22 kills.
Emporia State improves to 17-9, 7-6 MIAA. Central Oklahoma falls to 12-15, 7-8 MIAA.
Emporia State plays its final road match of the regular season tomorrow at Pittsburg State. First serve from John Lance Arena is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
