April 27, 2013 - The Emporia State track and field team captured top six finishes in all four events they competed in on Saturday at the 104th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
Briar Ploude was the only Hornet competing in an individual event and he set an Emporia State outdoor record in the high jump. He cleared 7-02.25 (2.19m) and finished second to Purdue’s Geoff Davis on misses. He is currently ranked fourth in the nation.
The women’s 1600m relay team of Marqueita Marisette, Peyton Weiss, Lindsay Kunkel, and Jackie Jacobs turned in the seventh best effort in Division II this season. They ran a 3:44.65 to place fifth and move into the fourth spot in the Emporia State all-time list.
The men’s 400m relay team of Derwin Hall, Vincent Howze, Andrew Etheridge, and Shjuan Richardson ran a season’s best 40.76 to move to 12th among Division II schools this season. It is the third best time in Emporia State history.
The foursome of Andrew Etheridge, Gannon Mack, Tyler Swalley, and Payson Maydew placed sixth in the seldom run men’s 4x110m hurdle shuttle relay.
The Hornets now prepare for the MIAA Outdoor Championships next weekend in Hays, Kan. Emporia State is ranked first or second in seven events with Vincent Howze in the 200m, Carmen King in the long jump and Briar Ploude in the high jump leading the league.
