June 6, 2013 - With five of 15 sports programs placing in the top 35 nationally in NCAA post season play, Emporia State University finished in the top 100 out of over 300 NCAA Division II schools in the Learfield Sports Director’s Cup standings for the 11th straight year with 244 points. The Director’s Cup measures the overall strength of an athletic program based on NCAA postseason play. The Hornets placed 78th this year and were the only MIAA school in the top 100 last year that improved their ranking this year.

The Lady Hornet basketball team advanced to the South Central Regional Championship game to finish ninth nationally in the Director’s Cup system. It is the 11th straight year Emporia State has had at least one team finish in the top ten nationally. The men's track and field team placed 15th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and placed 21st indoors. Women's track and field was 29th at the outdoor championships while the Hornet softball team advanced to the NCAA tournament for an MIAA record tenth straight year to round out the scoring for Emporia State.

The Director's Cup only takes finishes in NCAA Championship play into consideration. Although the Hornet football team went 10-2, finished second in the MIAA and won the Kanza Bowl those efforts are not reflected in the Director's Cup standings.

Emporia State was among nine MIAA schools in the top 100 out of 315 active NCAA Division II member institutions. All 14 eligible MIAA members were ranked in the top 175, the only D2 conference in the nation that can make that claim.
