Emporia State Opens Lady Blues Fall Classic With Sweep

October 5, 2012- Emporia State volleyball captured both its matches on the opening day of the Lady Blues Classic in Topeka, Kan., sweeping Southeastern Oklahoma State 25-17, 25-6, and 25-12 in its morning match and defeating East Central 25-16, 27-25, 22-25, 25-16.

Brianna Kaiser recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs against SEOSU. Carly Spicer notched 10 kills on 13 attempts, hitting .769 for the match. Paige Vanderpool led the Hornets with 17 digs, while adding nine kills. Katie Deutschmann had 23 assists and six kills. Meg Schwartz served two aces to go along with 16 digs.

As a team, Emporia State hit .386 for the match while holding SEOSU to a .069 hitting percentage. The Hornets hit .567 (17-for-30) in set two and committed zero attack errors.

The Hornets never trailed in set one or set two, as there were only two lead changes the entire match.

In the afternoon match against East Central, Kaiser led the Hornets with 17 kills and added 14 digs for her second double-double of the day. Spicer recorded 13 kills and four total blocks against the Tigers hitting a team best .462. Morgan Buckner recorded double digits in kills with 12 while Vanderpool tallied 15 digs to lead the team. The Hornets registered 10 services aces, with Kaitlin Stearns accounting for four. Deustchmann and Sydney Hartman had 27 and 24 assists, respectively.

The Hornets controlled sets one and four, as they only trailed once in each set.

Set two was closely contested with nine ties and six lead changes. Emporia State came out of a timeout down 22-17, and rallied for three straight points to cut the lead to three. Kaiser accounted for four of the next five points to give the Hornets a 24-23 advantage. With the scores tied at 25-25, Kaiser found herself at the serving line and proceeded to serve two consecutive aces to give Emporia State a 27-25 victory.

Emporia State improved to 11-6. Southeastern Oklahoma State is now 2-14. East Central falls to 5-14.

Emporia State finishes the Lady Blues Fall Classic with matches against Southern Nazarene at 1:30 p.m. and Southwestern Oklahoma State at 5:30 p.m
