Emporia State Men's Basketball Falls To Tulsa 60-49

October 27, 2012-The Emporia State men's basketball team fell to Division I Tulsa 60-49 in the first exhibition action of the season for both teams. Freshman Terrence Moore led the Hornets with 12 points.

The Hurricane jumped out to a 7-2 lead at the first media timeout. The Hornets responded with a 7-0 lead of their own to take a 9-7 lead with 14:23 left in the half. Tulsa scored the next five points to take the lead for good, however the lead would not grow to more than five points the rest of the half. The Hornets shot .423 from the field despite going one of six from behind the three-point line and held the Hurricane to .333 shooting in the first half.

After Kaleb Wright hit a free throw to pull Emporia State within 26-24 with 19:35 left in the game, Tulsa went on a 10-0 run to take a 36-24 lead with 12:44 left. The Hornets cut the lead to seven at 39-32 with 10:03 left when the Hurricane went on a 6-0 run to hit their biggest lead of the night at 45-32 with 8:17 remaining. Emporia State had one more push as they cut the lead to seven at 54-47 with :57.1 left on a three pointer by Wright. Rashad Smith answered for Tulsa with a layup and then a steal and dunk to push the Tulsa lead back to 11 points with :39.3 left.

All nine Hornets that played scored at least three points, led by Moore with 12 and Wright with nine points. Daniel Shaw had a game high nine rebounds and Gavin Brown had eight boards as Emporia State outrebounded Tulsa 44-36 on the afternoon. ESU shot .327 from the field and .214 from behind the three point line for the game.

Tulsa was led by Rashad Smith with 19 points and nine rebounds. The Hurricane shot .375 from the field and had six blocked shots.

Emporia State is back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at #7 Kansas. Tip-off from Allen Fieldhouse is set for 7:00 p.m.

This was the first game for Tulsa head coach and former Kansas Jayhawk Danny Manning, making this the first time in Emporia State history that both head coaches were former NBA First Round Draft Choices.
