December 8, 2012- The Emporia State men outscored Central Missouri by eight points from the field but could not overcome a 15 point deficit at the line in a 72-65 loss to the Mules in Warrensburg, Mo. The Mules hit six of ten free throws in the final 3:00 after the Hornets took a 65-64 lead with 3:16 left.
Emporia State jumped out to a 19-5 lead with 11:41 left to open the game and led by 14 with 10:07 left when Central Missouri started their comeback. The Mules used a 16-2 run to tie the score with 4:15 left in the half and would take a 34-28 lead to the locker rooms.
UCM opened the second half on a 14-4 run to go up 48-32 with 14:24 left in the game.They took their biggest lead of the night at 61-44 with 10:36 left when the Hornets started their comeback. Gavin Brown capped a 16-2 run with a lay-up at the 5:05 mark to pull the Hornets within three at 63-60.
Widgett Washington hit a free throw to push the UCM lead back to four points with 4:33 left. Terrence Moore hit a layup and Kaleb Wright canned a three pointer to give the Hornets a 65-64 lead with 3:16 remaining. Emporia State would miss their final five shots from the field and Central Missouri would connect on six of ten free throws to secoure the win.
After being held scoreless at Northeastern State in his last game, Wright scored a game high 20 points to lead Emporia State. Paul Bunch had his first career double double with 16 points and 15 rebounds for the Hornets.
Emporia State is back in action on Saturday, December 15 against Southwestern in White Auditorium. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. following Winter Commencement exercises for Emporia State.
Bunch's 15 rebounds are the most by a Hornet since Lamar Wilbern pulled down 16 at Pittsburg State on January 10, 2009.
