May 24, 2014- The Emporia State men finished 19th and the Hornet women were 67th at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Allendale, Mich. Emporia State's men and women combined for seven All-American honors in four events during the meet.
The all new foursome of A.J. West, Duke Tibbs, Brady Huckaby, and Ryan Dickson ran 40.77 to finish eighth and earn All-American status for the men's 4x100m relay team for the second straight year and fourth time in the last six years.
Nikki Wetstein ran 13.85 in the women's 100m hurdles to place eighth. It was her first All-American performance in three trips to the outdoor national championships.
Kyle Pfizenmaier placed 16th in the men's javelin at 195-05 (59.57m) while Sara Dunkin threw 129-00 (39.33m) to place 17th in the women's javelin.
Morgan Brant was the other Hornet to compete on Saturday and she failed to clear her opening height in the women's high jump.
This is the 12th straight year the Emporia State men have scored at the national meet and both teams have scored in 20 of the last 22 outdoor national championships.
The outdoor track and field championships bring to an end another outstanding year for Emporia State Athletics. The 19th place showing for the Emporia State men marks the fifth team to finish in the top 20 nationally this year. The Hornet football team started the year going 9-2 and advanced to the NCAA Playoffs for the first time in ten years. The Lady Hornet basketball team capped the winter with their second straight MIAA Tournament Championship and third straight trip to the NCAA Regional Final. The spring was an exceptional season with five of six teams advancing to NCAA post-season action. The Emporia State softball team won the MIAA regular season championship and advanced to the NCAA Central Region 1 final. The Hornet baseball team captured the MIAA Tournament title and played for the NCAA Central Region Championship. The Hornet women's tennis team also made it to the NCAA Tournament in the spring, making the tourney for the first time since 2008.
The athletic year will be celebrated June 6 and 7 with the annual Emporia State Golf Tournament and Auction. The Auction starts on Friday, June 6 at 6 p.m. in White Auditorium while the golf will take place on Saturday with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. at the Emporia Municipal Course.
