January 5, 2013-Emporia State had a ten point lead with 3:30 left but were outscored 12-2 down the stretch to go to overtime before falling 79-76 to Ft. Hays State on Saturday.
Kaleb Wright gave the Hornets a three point lead with 8.8 seconds left but the Tigers Ben Congiusta hit a three-pointer with 2.7 seconds left to tie the game. Chris Sights launched a three-pointer from mid court that hit off the back of the rim as the game went to overtime tied at 72.
Ft. Hays State scored the first five points of the extra frame. Sights hit a pair of free throws with 2:33 left and Kaleb Wright scored on a jumper with 1:40 left to pull the Hornets within one at 77-76. Craig Nicholson hit a pair of free thows with 25 seconds left to give the Tigers a 79-76 lead.
Sights missed a pair of three-pointers in the final 11 seconds. Marty Wendel missed the front end of a one and one with 3.1 seconds left to give the Hornets a last chance, but Wright could not get off a shot after pulling the rebound.
Five Hornets scored in double figures led by Sights with 16 points. Paul Bunch and Wright each scored 13 points while Terrence Moore added 11 and Tre Boutilier chipped in ten. Wright had seven assists and Gavin Brown added a team high six rebounds and six assists.
Ft. Hays State was led by Dwayne Brunson with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
The Hornets are back in action on Tuesday, January 8 at Southwest Baptist. Tip-off from the Meyers Sports Center is set for 7:30 p.m.
