December 18, 2012-Laura Patrick's career high 29 points were not enough for Emporia State as the Lady Hornets fell 74-67 to Abilene Christian on the second night of the WTAMU Golf Cars Christmas Classic in Canyon, Texas.
Patrick matched her previous career high with 20 of Emporia State's 35 first half points. The game see-sawed back and forth for much of the first half as there were five ties and seven lead changes in the first 20 minutes. The Lady Hornets went to the break trailing 38-35.
Emporia State opened the second half with a 12-3 run to take their biggest lead of the night at 47-41 with 16:33 left in the game. The Wildcats answered with a 6-0 run to tie the score with 13:56 remaining. Neither team would take more than a four point lead over the next 11:12 with two ties and three lead changes in that time.
ACU went up by five at 67-62 with 2:44 left in the game on a pair of Sadie Dickinson free throws. Patrick hit a three pointer at the 2:13 mark to pull the Lady Hornets within 67-65 but that would be the final field goal for ESU. The Wildcats answered with a Savannah Smith bucket to make it a two possession game with 1:59 left and Merissa Quick hit one of two free throws with 1:42 remaining to cut the lead to 69-66. Renata Marquez but ACU up by five at the 1:26 mark on a lay-up. Quick hit one of two free throws to make it 71-67 with 49 seconds left, but that would be the final score for the Lady Hornets. The Wildcats then hit three of four free throws to ice the game.
Patrick's 29 points were the most scored by a Lady Hornet since Heather Robben scored 31 against Central Missouri on Dec. 10, 2011. Rachel Hanf was the only other Lady Hornet in double figures, finishing with a season high 17 points. Rheanna Egli dished a career high nine assists with only two turnovers, but was one of ten from the field. Desiree Wylie had a career high 12 rebounds and was joined in double figures by Jocelyn Cummings who tied her career high with 11 boards.
The Lady Hornets are back in action on December 30 when they play host to Central Methodist. Tip-off in White Auditorium is set for 7:00 p.m.
Hanf hit two three-pointers to move into fifth by herself on the Emporia State career list with 159.
