August 5, 2013 - Despite a 10-2 campaign that included a second place finish in the MIAA, the Emporia State football team was slated for seventh in both the MIAA Coaches and Media Polls released today. The Hornets did garner one first place vote in the media poll.

There was a clear split in the voting of both polls. The Hornets were almost as close to first as they were to eighth in the coaches poll. Emporia State was just 46 points behind co-favorites Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri in the coaches poll and were 43 points in front of Ft. Hays State, who came in eighth. The Hornets were one of four teams to pick up a first place vote in the media poll. The gap between seventh and eighth was the largest point differential in both polls.

Emporia State has exceeded expectations in each of the last three years. This is the third straight season the Hornets have been picked seventh. Last season the Hornets 9-2 record was good for second place in the MIAA, their top conference finish since winning the MIAA in 2003. They placed sixth in both 2011 and 2010 after being slated for seventh and ninth respectively.

Emporia State will look to build on last year's ten win season and Kanza Bowl win with 14 returning starters and a total of 20 players that have started at least one game.

The Hornets open the season on September 5 at Ft. Hays State and will open the five game home portion of the schedule on Thursday, September 12 against Nebraska-Kearney on Jones Field at Welch Stadium. Northeastern State will be the opponent on September 28 for Family Day at Emporia State and the annual Football Traditions will follow the game. The MIAA Television Network will be on hand for Emporia State's Homecoming game against Southwest Baptist on October 12. It will be the fourth straight year Welch Stadium has hosted the MIAA Network. The Hornets will wrap up the season with two home games beginning with Northwest Missouri on November 9. The most played active rivalry in NCAA Division II returns to Welch Stadium as Washburn comes to Emporia on the final weekend of the 2013 regular season. The Hornets defeated the Ichabods 55-23 in last season's Turnpike Tussle in Topeka.
