October 6, 2012-Tyler Eckenrode threw for 299 yards in the second half to lead #25 Emporia State to a 19-15 come from behind win at Southwest Baptist on Saturday. The Hornets trailed 15-0 at the half and scored 19 second half points to move to 6-0 on the year.
SBU's Chris Muhammad returned the opening kick-off 98 yards and the Hornets trailed for the first time this year. The PAT was blocked by Jeff Richards to give the Bearcats a 6-0 lead 15 seconds into the game. The lead grew to 8-0 when Derwin Hall was tackled in the endzone with 5:47 left in the quarter.
Eckenrode suffered a groin injury on the Hornets final drive of the first quarter and sat out the next four series for Emporia State. True freshman Brent Wilson took his place and threw two interceptions, the first of which set the Bearcats up at the Hornet 15 yard line. Dan Connors scored the only offensive touchdown for SBU on an eight yard run and the Hornets trailed 15-0 with 5:14 left in the half. SBU would get the ball again at the Hornet ten yard line following the second interception with 4:23 left in the half. They would drive to the Hornet two yard line but the ESU defense held to send the teams to the lockerrooms.
The Hornets would get on the board with 11:25 left in the third quarter when Eckenrode hit Shjuan Richardson for a 46 yard touchdown to pull within 15-7. Eckenrode found Adam Schiltz from six yards out with 36 seconds left in the third and were within 15-13 when the two point conversion attempt failed. Eckenrode completed the comeback with a 73 yard touchdown strike to Austin Willis with 12:29 left in the game.
The Emporia State defense held twice on fourth down in the final 4:11 of the game , the last one coming on fourth and two from the Hornet seven yard line.
Eckenrode ended the game 17 of 19 for 322 yards and three touchdowns, going 15 of 23 for 299 yards and all three scores in the second half. Schiltz had seven catches for 83 yards and a touchdown, Willis had two for 74 yards and a score, while Richardson had two for 63 yards and a touchdown. Ray Ray Davis added three catches for 85 yards and Jordan Tice had 12 carries for 67 yards.
Ben Carlso led the ESU defense with 15 tackles and Jeff Richards added eight with three TFL.
The Hornets, who are 6-0 for the first time since 1988, will return to Jones Field at Welch Stadium on Oct. 13 for a Homecoming contest against Lindenwood. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m.
