April 21, 2013 - Emporia State clinched a spot in the MIAA Softball Tournament with a double header split at Northwest Missouri on Sunday in Maryville, Mo. The Hornets lost the first game 4-3 and came back with a 6-1 victory in game two.
The Hornets got on the board first in the matinee with an unearned run in the second inning. Cacy Williams reached on a one out single followed by Andrea Piezuch reaching on an error. Stephanie Goodwin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a strike out Katie Huffman delivered an RBI single, but Emporia State would leave the bases loaded.
Northwest tied the game in the bottom of the third with an unearned run of their own. Stephanie Price then gave the Bearcats the lead with a lead off home run in the fourth. Rachael Schmitz then gave a NWMSU a 4-1 lead with a two out, two run home run. Northwest threatened again in the fifth when they got two runners on with one out. Karley Schmelzer came on in relief and retired the next two batters to get out of the inning with no harm being done.
Tricia Vogel led off the top of the sixth with a double and scored on Amanda Self's home run to pull Emporia State within 4-3. Williams followed by reaching on an error and went to second but was left there as Bearcat starter Jenna Creger retired the next three batters, two by strikeout.
Schmelzer struck out the side in the bottom of the sixth to keep the Hornets in the game. Jessica Gragg pinch hit with two outs and but the tying run on base as she was hit by a pitch. Creger was able to get Vogel to pop out to end the game.
Amanda Self went two for three with two RBI, a run scored and a home run. Lauren Sharp took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits with four walks.
Taylor Zordel led off the night cap with a home run and later gave the Hornets a 2-0 lead in the third. With two outs she walked, then stole second and third before coming home on Jessica Brewer's single to center.
Huffman, Bradie Schmelzer, and Goodwin hit consecutive singles with one out in the seventh and Zordel walked to force in a run. Gragg pinch hit again and came through with an RBI single. Vogel delivered a two RBI single to right center before getting thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.
Northwest got a run back in the bottom of the seventh. Karley Schmelzer hit Hailee Hendricks to lead off the inning and Kristen Uthe followed with a single down the left field line. Price drove in Hendricks with a double before Schmelzer retired the final three batters, the last two by strike out.
Schmelzer scattered four hits and struckout nine as she improved to 22-6 on the year. Zordel was one for two officially but reached base three times and scored all three times with an RBI.
Emporia State is scheduled to play a makeup double header with Newman on Monday. First pitch from the Trusler Sports Complex is set for 5:00 p.m.
