Emporia State Baseball Winning Streak Goes to 14 Games

April 25, 2014- The Emporia State baseball team moved their winning streak to 14 games with a double header sweep of Lindenwood on Friday in St. Charles, Mo. The Hornets won the first game 7-0 and held on for a 6-3 win in the second game.

Shawn Talkington tossed a three hit shut out in the opener with six strikeouts and two walks. He got all the run support he would need in the top of the first when Levi Parker led off with a double, went to third on a bunt single by Justin Harris and scored when Dean Long reached on an error by the short stop. Toby Cornejo's sac fly scored Harris and made it 2-0 before Talkington took the mound. Tory Bell hit a solo homer in the second for a 3-0 lead and double by Cornejo and Aaron Gile made it 4-0 in the fourth. Long hit a three run homer in the fifth to put Emporia State up 7-0.

Harris went three for four with two runs scored and Parker was two for two with two walks and two runs. Long was officially one for four with four RBI. Talkington was perfect through three innings and struck out six of the first eight Lions he faced.

Long and Parker again hooked up to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in the nightcap. Parker led off with a single, went to second on a ground out, stole third and then came home when Long grounded out to second off the pitcher. Price Jacobs drove in a run in the third for a 2-0 lead before the Lions got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the third. Emporia State answered with a two run double from Harris in the top of the fourth and added a pair of unearned runs in the fifth for a 6-2 lead. Back to back doubles off starter Jarred Miller made it 6-3 before Dylan McEwin came on to end the threat in the bottom of the seventh.

Brenton Higgins relieved McEwin in the eighth with one out and two on and got a strike out and foul out to end the inning. The Lions loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth but Higgins got a fly out to short left and a double play to end the game and pick up his 11th save of the season.

The Hornets scored six runs on only four hits but earned eight walks on the night. Harris had two RBI to lead the Hornets. Cornejo and Long were officially zero for four but both reached base three times with Long getting three walks and an RBI while Cornejo had two walks and reached on an error before scoring a run.

Emporia State will wrap up the regular season on Saturday with another double header against Lindenwood. First pitch from the Lou Brock Sports Complex is set for 1:00 p.m.

NOTE:
The 14 game winning streak is the longest for Emporia State since they opened the 2011 season 15-0.
