November 13, 2012 - The fifth-seeded Emporia State volleyball team advanced to the Semi-finals of the MIAA Tournament with a 25-20, 17-25, 30-28, 25-19 victory over #13 Truman, the fourth seed, at Pershing Arena in Kirksville, Mo.
Katie Deutschmann earned her second triple-double of the season, recording 11 kills, 24 assists, and 10 digs. Carly Spicer led the team with nine total blocks, two solo, to go along with nine kills. Paige Vanderpool led the Hornets in kills with 13 and digs with a season-high 23.
Deutschmann and Vanderpool were joined by Meg Schwartz, Emily Barto, and Sydney Hartman in recording double-digit digs.
The Hornets held a sizeable advantage in blocks, where they out blocked the Bulldogs 17-8.
Emporia State got off to a fast start in the first set, leading 4-0 early, led by back-to-back service aces from Emily Barto. Truman climbed back into the set, tying the score at 16-16 before the Hornets went on a timely 4-0 run to make the score 20-16, holding on for the win in the first set.
Truman led from start to finish in the second set to equal the match at a set apiece, holding the Hornets to a .056 hitting percentage for the set.
The third set proved to be the most telling, as there were seven ties and three lead changes. Emporia State gained an early lead, forcing two Truman timeouts, the second coming with the Hornets leading 17-11. Momentum seemed to shift as Truman forced Emporia State to call timeout with its lead cut to two at 23-21. Truman's Megan Sharpe came up with a timely kill on an Emporia State set point opporunity to even the score at 24-24. Truman gained a 28-27 lead after an Emporia State attack error, but a Vanderpool kill, a block, and a kill from Raney Okeson clinched the set for the Hornets.
The Hornets closed out the match after taking a 15-14 lead, which was extended to four points after back to back blocks and a Courtney Haring kill. Vanderpool and Spicer combined on a block to make the score 23-19, then Okeson sealed the match with another one of her nine kills.
