LOHMANN NAMED ALL-AMERICAN
January 19, 2012-Emporia State junior safety Derek Lohmann has earned NCAA Division II All-American honors from the Don Hansen Football Gazette. He is one of 12 MIAA players on the first or second-teams.
Lohmann led the MIAA and was third in the nation in total interceptions with eight this season. His 14 picks in three years ties the ESU career record set by Kelly Nusser from 1980-83. He was named first-team All-MIAA this past season and second team All-MIAA as a sophomore.
The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988. Don Hansen’s Football Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003.
The All-American honor for Lohmann marks teh 22nd time a Hornet has earned Division II All-American honors from Hansen since ESU joined the NCAA in 1992.
The Hornets finished 5-6 last season, the first time Emporia State has posted back to back five win seasons since 2003-04. The Hornets are set to return a total of 16 starters on offense and defense next season, including nine of 11 on offense and seven of 11 on defense.
