ESU Wins MIAA Opener Over Truman

March 8, 2013-The Emporia State Lady Hornets held the nation's best three point shooting team to just .182 from behind the arc in a 61-56 win over Truman in the first round of the MIAA Tournament in Kansas City. The Bulldogs went zero for seven in the second half.

The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 14-2 lead to start the game. The Bulldogs closed to within five with 8:41 left when Emporia State went on an 8-0 run to push the lead back to 26-13 with 3:48 left in the half. Truman went on a 7-0 run to make it 26-20 with 1:09 left in the half. Rheanna Egli answered with a three pointer with 53 seconds left and Jocelyn Cummings hit a layup with four seconds left to send the Lady Hornets to the lockerroom with a 31-20 lead.

The lead remained above five points for most of the second half. The Bulldogs closed to four with 7:00 remaining and forced the Lady Hornets deep into the shot clock when Egli hit a three from the corner to take a 50-43 lead. Truman went on a 10-3 run and tied the score at 53 with 2:18 left on a Jennifer Conway jumper. Laura Patrick then hit a jumper with 2:01 left to give the Lady Hornets the lead for good. Truman closed to within one when Nicole Gloor hit one of two free throws with 1:04 left but Rachel Hanf grabbed the rebound and connected on two charities of her own with 1:02 left.

Cummings grabbed the rebound on Truman's possession and missed a pair of free throws to keep it within three. Hanf stole the ball from Becka McHenry and Egli hit one of two free throws to make it a two possession game at 58-54 with 24 seconds left. After another missed three by Truman, Patrick hit two free throws with 11 seconds left for a 60-54 lead. Alli Norton scored in the lane with four seconds left to pull the Bulldogs within four, but Hanf hit one of two free throws with three seconds left to secure the win for Emporia State.

Patrick had a game high 18 points with five rebounds and three assists to lead the Lady Hornets. She was joined in double figures by Egli with 14, including a three of five effort from behind the three-point line, and Merissa Quick with tne points nad eight rebounds.

The Lady Hornets will play #9 Washburn in the semifinals on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. in Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City. The two split the regular season series with each team winning on their home court.

Hanf moved into the top 20 in career scoring at Emporia State with 1,156 points.
The Lady Hornets are a conference best 18-2 in the MIAA Tournament Quarterfinals.
Saturday's meeting with Washburn will be the third straight Tournament Turnpike Tussle and the seventh time the two have met in conference tournament play.
