ESU Baseball Uses Wild Ninth Inning To Move On In Regional

Russelville, Ark. – Emporia State used a wild top of the ninth inning to earn a spot in the final day at the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament. The Hornets would need to win two games tomorrow in order to take the regional championship.

In the top of the ninth with the bases loaded Justin Harris scored the Hornets first run with on a balk. Dean Long would then score on a wild pitch with Toby Cornejo scoring on an error on the very same play.

The Hornets had only four hits in a game that saw only ten hits total as the ESU left only five runners stranded. Travis Hendry pitched a gem early going 6.1 innings allowing just five base runners and striking out six in a no decision. For the second game Shawn Talkington came out of the bullpen to earn the win going 2.1 innings with three strikeouts allowing just two men on the base paths.

ESU will play tomorrow at 1 p.m. against either Minnesota State-Mankato or Arkansas Tech from Russelville, Ark.
