ESPN To Broadcast World University Games

MANHATTAN, Kan. – With the 2013 Kazan World University Games set to begin Friday, ESPN announced last week it will be providing more than 40 hours of coverage on ESPNU. Thanks to the coverage Kansas State fans to watch the Wildcats play as the Team USA contingent at the Games in Russia.

With the announcement by ESPN this year’s World University Games become the first Universiade to be broadcast live in the United States.

An additional 250 hours will be shown live online on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app for smartphones and tablets. The Games will also be available through Xbox Live and AppleTV, giving the World University Games the potential to reach more than 85 million households.

ESPN’s coverage will focus mainly on basketball, water polo, swimming, track and field, beach volleyball and volleyball.

“We are very excited that the World University Games will be shown on ESPNU and online at ESPN3,” said K-State Head Coach Suzie Fritz. “This is an incredible opportunity for us to represent the United States, and for the family and friends of our players and our fans to watch us play makes this even more special.”

ESPN worked with the world university sport governing body FISU to secure the deal and provide the unprecedented coverage of the Games in the United States.

“Our agreement to deliver FISU events is a testament to our commitment of serving sports fans with quality programming, both domestically and from around the world," said Todd Myers, director of programming and acquisitions for ESPN, in a statement to insidethegames.biz. “We look forward to carrying these events to a U.S. audience."

The volleyball team leaves for Russia on Thursday morning with the opening ceremonies on Friday. The team’s first competition is set for July 8 with the start of pool play. In USA’s pool are Czech Republic, Poland and hosting nation Russia. The first round of pool play for women’s volleyball is July 8-10 with the next round of action July 12-14.

At the last World University Games two years ago in Shenzhen, China, the American team came home with a total of 50 medals, 17 gold.
