Kansas City, Mo. – Southwest Baptist defeated Fort Hays State 5-0 and Northeastern State won 5-0 over Washburn in the MIAA Tournament’s first round for the women. In the second set of games Central Oklahoma knocked off Emporia State 5-0 and Northwest Missouri defeated Nebraska-Kearney 5-2 at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo.
Southwest Baptist 5, Fort Hays State 0
Southwest Baptist got things going in #1 doubles as Fanni Varga and Christina Zentai defeated FHSU’s Melissa Skovira and Brittney Ricci by an 8-3 tally. SBU’s Adrien Kovacs and Faiga Schmidt won 8-5 over Caitlyn Wark and Camille Caron-Bedard in #2 doubles. In the final doubles match-up SBU’s Mehak Singh and Andjela Panovski won 8-2 over Brianna Willams and Laura Johnson.
In singles Fanni Varga won 6-1 and 6-0 to defeat Camille Caron-Bedard in #1 singles. Christina Zentai would then defeat Caitlyn Wark 6-0 and 6-0 to seal the Bearcat victory.
SBU will now face Northwest Missouri in the semi-final round at 1 p.m. on April 20 from the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo. FHSU will face Nebraska-Kearney in a consolation match-up at 11 a.m.
Northeastern State 5, Washburn 0
Northeastern State picked up a opening round win that started with a tough one. In #1 doubles Ivana Belejova and Kristina Savchenkov needed extra points to earn a 9-8 (7-5) victory. On the second doubles court Houda Ballmine and Jeanne Mallem of NSU won 8-4 over Sophie O’Neill and Casyn Buchman. In the final doubles match Barbora Jirickova and Martina Bruzikova rolled to an 8-1 victory over Gwen Shepler and Nzingha Banks.
In #1 singles Ivana Belejova earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Washburn’s Sophie O’ Neill. NSU’s Houda Bellamine would seal the match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Kirsten Holle.
Northeastern State will face Central Oklahoma tomorrow at 1 p.m. from the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo. WU will face in-state rival ESU in a consolation match at 11 a.m.
Central Oklahoma 5, Emporia State 0
The Bronchos of Central Oklahoma advanced to the semi-finals of the MIAA Women’s Tennis Championships. It all opened on the #1 doubles court where Antonella Rossi and Rose Cabato defeated Nicole Jara and Taylor Smith 8-6. In #2 doubles Petra Pesic and Alina Gorina won 8-3 over Kayla Fraley and Alex Crowe. In the final doubles match Laura Klingert and Kristin Richardson pulled out a 9-8 (7-3) victory over Tiffany Khounsombath and Somer Schmidt.
In singles Petra Pesic got things rolling at the #2 spot winning 6-1, 6-1 over Taylor Smith. Alina Gorina would then close out the match winning 6-1, 6-0 over Tiffany Khounsombath.
Central Oklahoma will now face Northeastern State at 1 p.m. tomorrow from the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo. ESU will now face fellow turnpike resident Washburn in a consolation match-up at 11 a.m.
Northwest Missouri 5, Nebraska-Kearney 2
Northwest Missouri early winning in #1 doubles 8-4 with victory by Camila Quesada and Alexis Bartek over Vanessa Gunawan and Heather Connolly. In the #2 doubles Natalia Galindo and Gisela Font outscored Kristin Weems and Britni Norfolk 8-4. Nebraska-Kearney would rebound as Kelly Messbarger and Tealyn Trimble won 9-8 (7-3) over Leslee Feldhaus and Emily Hoffman.
Nebraska-Kearney would then knot up the match as Kristin Weems won 6-0, 6-3 over Natalia Galindo. Alexis Bartek of NWMSU won 6-2, 6-3 over Britni Norfolk in #3 singles. Gisela Font won #4 singles 6-3, 6-1 over Heather Connolly for the Bearcats. Emily Hoffman would close things out in #6 singles winning 6-2, 6-4 over Stephanie Irvin.
Northwest Missouri will face top seeded Southwest Baptist at 1 p.m. on April 20 from the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo. UNK will face former RMAC foe Fort Hays State at 11 a.m. in a consolation match.
