AKRON, Ohio – The Kansas State men's golf team turned in a fourth-place finish in the 2013 Firestone Invitational at the par-72, 7,125-yard Firestone Country Club on Tuesday. The Wildcats carded a 13-over 877 and were led by senior Alex Carney and sophomore Matt Green, who finished the event in a three-way tie for third place.

“We came up a little short today, but to only lose by six shots showed signs of progress, and hopefully that will set us up confidence-wise for the last event of the fall,” said head coach Tim Norris. “I think things are turning in the right direction but we have to shore up a couple of things. Overall, to be that close to winning was a pretty good performance by these guys.”

Carney and Green continued their solid play as both golfers finished at 2-under 214. Carney fired a final-round 2-under 70 while Green recorded a 2-over 74 on Tuesday. This week’s result marks the second-consecutive top-10 finish for each golfer.

Daniel Wood ended the event at 6-over 232 to tie for 32nd place. Rounding out the Wildcat scoring lineup was Kyle Weldon (T57th) and Tyler Norris (89th).
South Carolina-Aiken put together the best score of Tuesday’s final round to claim the team title at 7-over 871. Eastern Michigan’s Stuart Grehan took home the individual crown as he finished at 9-under 207.

K-State will have three and a half weeks off before closing out the fall season in the 2013 Pacific Invitational, October 31-November 2, at the Stockton Golf and Country Club in Stockton, Calif. The Wildcats will look to defend their event title as they finished atop the team leaderboard in with a 47-under par 817.
