Buck O’Neil Centennial Celebration, KidsFest Highlight Homestand

KANSAS CITY, MO (July 6, 2011) – The Kansas City Royals celebrate the past and the future with two special events scheduled during the club’s upcoming four-game series with the Detroit Tigers, July 7-10.

The club remembers a Kansas City and baseball legend with a special Buck O’Neil Centennial Celebration on Saturday, July 9. As part of the festivities, the first 20,000 fans receive a commemorative Buck O’Neil Centennial Celebration pennant featuring the Kansas City Monarchs presented by Sprint. In addition, there will be special tributes to O’Neil during the pregame ceremony and throughout the game.

The Royals then celebrate all young Royals fans and kids at heart with KidsFest on Sunday, July 10. Gates to the ballpark will open at 11:30 a.m., and festivities are set to include a Kids Superhero Cape giveaway, an Autograph Afternoon with select former Royals, and a pregame concert by Brendan Parker – the performer of “Spaghetti Eddie!” and other children’s songs.

In addition, the homestand features a number of fan-favorites such as an All You Can Eat Seats promotion, Buck Night, Fireworks Friday and the Sprint Fun Run.

GATE TIME CHANGES: Please note that Kauffman Stadium Gates A and E will open 90 minutes prior to game time for Monday-Thursday home games beginning with the upcoming homestand, allowing fans more time to enjoy the Outfield Experience and view batting practice from the outfield seating areas. All other gates will open one hour prior to game time for Monday-Thursday home games.

The Royals will continue to open all gates 90 minutes prior to game time for all Friday-Sunday home games.

Thursday, July 7 – Detroit Tigers vs. Royals, 7:10 p.m.

Saturday, July 9 – Detroit Tigers vs. Royals, 6:10 p.m.

· Buck O’Neil Centennial Celebration – In conjunction with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, the Royals celebrate the 100th anniversary of the late Buck O’Neil’s birth (born 11-13-11) with a special centennial celebration at Kauffman Stadium. A special pregame ceremony and video tributes to O’Neil are planned throughout the game.

Sunday, July 10 – Detroit Tigers vs. Royals, 1:10 p.m.

· KidsFest – Join us for a special day at Kauffman Stadium for all young Royals fans and kids at heart! Gates to the ballpark will open at 11:30 a.m. for the KidsFest festivities, which include a pregame concert by Brendan Parker, the performer of “Spaghetti Eddie!” and other children’s songs, in the Outfield Experience. Events also include appearances by Nickelodeon characters Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants and interactive booths presented by Royals partners. Fans can also enjoy an Autograph Afternoon and Family FunDay Sunday activities.

· Kids Superhero Cape – The first 8,000 kids 14 years and under receive an exclusive Royals Superhero Cape presented by U.S. Toy. (Photo attached.)

· Family FunDay Sunday – The July 10 festivities feature face painters, crazy hair artists, a caricature artist and a balloon artist. A stilt walker will also be on hand to entertain fans. · Autograph Afternoon – Meet your favorite former Royals during Autograph Afternoon. The one-hour autograph session, featuring Dennis Leonard, Jerry Terrell and Willie Wilson, will take place at Gate A near the Royals Hall of Fame from noon to 1 p.m. Alumni appearances subject to change.

· Fun Run presented by Sprint – All fans can run the bases after the game (conditions permitting).
