Balanced Effort Leads Kansas over TCU, 83-61
DALLAS – Sophomore Chelsea Gardner posted her third double-double tallying 11 points and grabbing a career-high 19 rebounds for Kansas, as the Jayhawks took an early lead and controlled the first-round game en route to a 83-61 win over TCU in the 2013 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship at the American Airlines Center Friday night .
Kansas improved to 18-12 on the season and secured its third win in the 2012-13 season over TCU, as sophomore guard Asia Boyd sparked the Jayhawks off the bench with 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting. With the win, Kansas advances in the tournament and will face Iowa State Saturday at 6 pm., in the quarterfinals.
The Jayhawks jumped out to an early lead, 12-4, at the 16:08 mark, with a three-point basket from both senior Monica Engelman and junior Markisha Hawkins.
Less than a minute later, TCU answered KU’s run with a three-point field goal from freshman guard Zahna Medley to bring the Horned Frogs within five points, 12-7.
The Horned Frogs attempted to take control of the game, coming within three, 14-11, at the 13:42 mark, but the Jayhawks pulled away and, at the 1:05 mark, had its largest lead, 38-25. Kansas held strong the remainder of the first half and kept the lead going into halftime, 40-30.
To open the second half, Angel Goodrich hit a three, just 44 seconds into play, to stretch the Jayhawks’ lead, 43-30. The two teams continued to battle with back and forth scores. Goodrich finished the game with a team-high 16 points and also added eight assists without a single turnover.
At the 13:46 mark, Bunny Williams sunk two free throws to start a 13-5 KU run that lasted 2:36. Boyd contributed six points of her 12 points during the time span. Kansas led by as many as 24 points and eventually cruised to the first-round win.
Senior Carolyn Davis was the fifth Jayhawk with double-figure points, finishing with 12 points and nine points
