Topeka’s hockey team has its official home opener on Friday. It’s the subject for tonight’s “On the Mark”.
I’d say so far … so good for the RoadRunners. The team went to Blaine, Minnesota and won two, lost one, with one tie in the league’s annual warm-up tournament. The only loss came against a U-S all-star team, and one of the victories came in dramatic overtime fashion.
Add that on to a pair of impressive exhibition victories, and there’s reason to believe this Topeka team is more than just pretty good.
If first impressions mean anything, the kids seem to be of good character. Spread out among area high schools and families, the squad appears to be putting both feet into the idea of making this work.
I do know the squad has some enthusiastic supporters. They might not number more than a boy scout troop right now, but they do pledge allegiance… and they are organized. That’s a good combination for growth.
This weekend, the RoadRunners welcome the Alaska Avalanche. Ticket prices will run --- roughly --- from six to 16 dollars a ticket. The bottom line is that the level of interest will be judged by their attendance figures.
While they are up against high school football on Friday, the Saturday night schedule looks relatively uncluttered.
It poses to be like old times at the Expocentre. But, clearly --- old times never translated into lasting times. So far --- early indications point to signs that thing might just be a little different.
That’s “On the Mark”.
