September 22, 2007-- The Emporia State Volleyball team hit .333 percent for the game as they upset #12 Pittsburg State in White Auditorium on Saturday. The Hornets used good serving and a great attack to build a 21-14 advantage before winning game one 30-22. In game two the Hornets only trailed once at 2-1 before rattling off points on their way to another 30-22 victory. In game three ESU fell behind 14-10 before going on a 9-1 run and eventually winning the match 30-22. The win is the Hornets second win against a ranked team this week after knocking off #23 Rockhurst on Tuesday.
The Hornet attack was led by Megan Koster who had a season high 18 kills to go along with 20 digs. The Hornets had three other starters in double figure kills as Arica Shepard had 16, Bree Boner had 13 and Mary Walczuk had 11. Amy Byfield had a season high 34 digs and also had two service aces for the Hornets. Ting Liu had assists in the game, coming only five short of her season high which came in a five match win over Central Oklahoma.
The Hornets held the Gorillas to only a .138 hitting percentage and got six blocks in the game from Boner. PSU was led by Linda Igbinigie who had eight kills in the match.
The Hornets move to 13-4 on the season and 3-1 in the MIAA. They will take on their third ranked team in a row when they travel to Washburn for a match on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.
