Blaine, MN - Under the watchful eye of a record shattering number of college and professional scouts, the Topeka RoadRunners represented their new home well, posting a 5-3 win over the Alexandria (MN) Blizzard on Wednesday evening.
It appears that dreams do come true. Topeka's hockey faithful dreamt of a competitive, hard working team to call their own. The RoadRunners, by all accounts, are delivering on that end. The NAHL dreamt of their annual Showcase being the marquee event of the year, and based on the number of people and scouts in attendance on Wednesday (typically the SLOW day of the Showcase), this event is truly living up to its potential. The RoadRunners wasted little time impressing the crowd, with Corey Jendras (Abingdon, MD) lighting the lamp 4:45 into the game for a 1-0 lead. Alexandria battled back and took a brief 2-1 lead, but Jendras answered by rocketing a wristshot upstairs to tie the game at 2-2. Blake Humphrey (Alta Loma, CA) put the 'Runners on top to stay early in the second, and goals from Jordan George (Madison, WI) and Reed Seckel (Melvin, MI) padded the lead, leaving Topeka in front 5-2 at the end of two periods. Alexandria would add a late power play goal, but veteran goalie Bryce Merriam (Bethel Park, PA) was solid down the stretch, picking up the win while turning aside 26 shots.
The RoadRunners wake up early on Thursday for a 10:00 am game against the Bismarck Bobcats, who lost of Wednesday evening. All games will be aired live locally in Topeka on AM 1490 KTOP, and all Showcase games will also be available on the B2 Network.
