K-State’s Hrebec Named a Candidate for AFCA Good Works Team

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State junior linebacker Alex Hrebec is one of 57 student-athletes from FBS institutions to be named a candidate for the 2010 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, the organization has announced. The team honors a distinguished group of college football players who stand out for the positive influence they have in their communities.

A former walk-on turned captain, Hrebec has been a steady contributor on the field and in the classroom for the Wildcats. He is a two-time First Team Academic All-Big 12 selection and remains active in the Manhattan community through service opportunities such as Read to Achieve, Special Olympics and Adopt-a-Family. Hrebec is also a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Student Mobilization Campus Ministry organization at K-State.

On the field, the St. Louis, Mo., product has combined for 42 total tackles, 2.5 sacks and one interception in two seasons at the linebacker position. He was named to the 2008 College Football News All-Freshman team after averaging 10.0 tackles per game over the final four games of the season.

In the areas of giving back and volunteerism, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team represents the "best of the best" among more than 50,000 student-athletes participating in the sport at all four-year institutions.

A special voting panel consisting of former Good Works Team members and prominent college football media members is responsible for selecting two 11-player Good Works Teams – one comprised of players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and another representing players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III, and the NAIA – to be announced in September.

In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and AFCA, each player must be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or community service while maintaining good academic standing.

The Allstate AFCA Good Works Teams were established in 1992 by the College Football Association, recognizing the extra efforts made by college football players and student support staff off the field.

Kansas State will participate in the annual Big 12 Media Days on Tuesday before opening the 2010 season September 4 with a nationally-televised matchup with UCLA. Tickets for the opener are going fast but excellent seating locations remain available.

Both season and single-game tickets for the six-game 2010 schedule also remain on sale. Bench season tickets are still available for just $300 each, while faculty and staff can also purchase tickets starting at $241 and enroll in payroll deduction.

To purchase tickets, contact the K-State Athletics Ticket Office at 1-800-221-CATS or visit www.k-statesports.com. A copy of the 2010 ticket brochure, which includes all ticket prices and options, is also available online.
