September 18, 2007-- The Emporia State volleyball team got 18 kills, 12 digs and two service aces from Arica Shepherd as they upset #23 Rockhurst in three games on Tuesday in Kansas City, Mo.
The Hornets out hit the Hawks .410 to .306 in game one with eight more kills and outdug RU 17-8 on their way to a 30-21 win. Arica Shepherd had eight of her 18 kills in the first game while Megan Koster and Brianne Boner each hit .750 with three kills in the first game. TIng Liu had 17 of her match high 49 assists in the first game.
ESU was down 15-7 in the second game before going on a 19-10 run to take the lead at 26-25 on a Koster kill. Shepherd had seven kills on .455 hitting with six digs while Boner hit .571 with five kills in the 30-27 game two win. Liu had another 17 assists in the second game.
Service aces proved to be the difference in the Hornets 30-28 win in game three. ESU had four service aces to none for RU in the final game. The two teams were even in kills with 17 each and Rockhurst had 5.0 blocks to ESU's 2.0 blocks. The Hornets trailed 13-9 before going on an 11-3 run with aces from Liu, Shepherd and Amy Byfield during the run to take a 20-16 lead.
Koster had 13 kills and ten digs on .357 hitting while Boner added 12 kills on .429 hitting with three blocks for the Hornets. Shepherd's 18 kills ties the MIAA season high for a three game match and Liu's 49 assists are the second most in a three game match by an MIAA player this season.
The Hornets are back in White Auditorium on Saturday to take on #12 Pittsburg State in the second of three straight matches against nationally ranked teams. First serve from downtown Emporia is set for 1 p.m.
