The kid from Kansas is the centerpiece for auto racing’s best story going.
Clint Bowyer is the subject for tonight’s “On the Mark”.
A day after picking up his first NASCAR win, the 28 year old from Emporia is fender to fender with the biggest names in racing. Bowyer is among the final 12 drivers who are racing for the NEXTEL Cup championship. Before his victory lane experience at the New Hampshire International Speedway, Bowyer seemed to be the guy least likely to win.
He earned a spot because the scoring system rewarded him for 13 top 10 finishes. But with a victory in the first leg of the Chase races, Bowyer is only 15 points behind the likes of Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon.
That has to be some “heady stuff” for a guy who is making network T-V appearances just a few years removed from working out of his own garage.
You know all the fellow area drivers who used to run against Bowyer on this state’s racing tracks are thrilled.
His success has everyone in Kansas on his side.
He’s one of us Admittedly nervous down the stretch of yesterday’s race, what you like most about Bowyer is that he seems … normal.
He insists on waxing his own race car.
There’s nothing “big time” about him except his future.
Bowyer’s "aw shucks, nothing to lose attitude could put that guy from Kansas right on top of the whole deal.
An entire state will be right behind him, rooting him on to the finish. That’s “On the Mark”.
