K-State’s Nelson Nominated for USA Today National Player of the Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State wide receiver Jordy Nelson, after his record-setting performance against Missouri State, is one of five players nationally to be named a nominee for this week’s USA Today Player of the Week award.

Nelson, a Riley, Kan., native, set two single-game school records with 15 catches and 209 yards against Missouri State while catching and throwing a touchdown pass and nearly breaking a punt return for his third score. Nelson finished the game with more receptions and yards than all other six receivers who caught a pass on Saturday night for the Wildcats.

He finished the night with 291 all-purpose yards, which ranks 10th in school history for a single-game, with 209 yards receiving and 82 yards on just two punt returns. Nelson has now recorded at least one reception in 23 of the last 27 games, dating back to the 2005 season.

The senior and former walk-on also recorded his second TD pass of the season in as many attempts Saturday with a 24-yard connection to Deon Murphy; Nelson connected with Leon Patton on his first attempt for a 21-yard score at Auburn.

Nelson broke the school record for catches in a game with 15, breaking the previous mark of 13 held by Michael Smith against Missouri on Oct. 21, 1989. Nelson is the first K-State player to collect 10 or more catches in a game since Darren Sproles had 10 on Oct. 30, 2004 against Texas Tech.

Nelson became the ninth player in school history to record 100 receptions in his career with a current total of 114, tying him with Jermaine Moreira (2003-06) for seventh in school history.
