LIBERAL, Kan. (AP) _ Former major league baseball player and manager Mike Hargrove will coach baseball in Liberal next season.
The Liberal BeeJays is a semipro team in southwest Kansas in the
Jayhawk summer baseball league. The team announced Friday that the
former manager of the Cleveland Indians, Seattle Mariners and the
Baltimore Orioles would coach the team in 2008.
Hargrove is a native of Perryton, Texas, about 40 miles south of Liberal. He played first base for the Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres, and the Indians during his 12-year major league playing career.
As a major league manager, Hargrove led Cleveland to five consecutive American League Central Division titles from 1995 to 1999 and two World Series appearances.
He resigned as manager of the Mariners in July of this year, saying his passion for major league baseball was beginning to fade.
